Riversdale School Newsletter Term 1 Week 2

Welcome: Leo Watson and Blake Mouat

Tena Koutou Parents, Caregivers and Whanau.

Hello everyone,

Kia ora e hoa mä.

Mā te tuakana ka tōtika te teina, mā te teina ka tōtika te tuakana

From the older sibling the younger learns how to do it, from the younger sibling the older learns how to be tolerant, everyone has responsibilities, both the old and the young.

Working Bee

A very big thank you to all those folk who came along and helped out at the working bee prior to school starting. Special thanks to the tennis court line painters, the garden tidiers, the flying fox team and Mike Saunders who trimmed the hedge behind the pool, hall and container – a whopping job! The lines on the courts still need further work so if you didn’t get a chance to come along on that day, we’d be very happy to see you at any time. We have all the paint and guides here to continue to complete the courts.

Riversdale School Hoodies and Sunhats

If you would like to purchase a Riversdale School hoodie or sunhat for your child you can order them at Southern Workwear in Gore. Pop into Southern Workwear to order and pay for the items you want. They have samples to try on for size.

Swimming

The seals on the sand filter tanks have ‘given up’ and need replaced. Replacement seals have been ordered from Christchurch, and fortunately we have an experienced seal replacer (husband of the Principal!) in the community, so this can happen as soon as they arrive. A note will go up on School Stream advising when the pool reopens. Murphy’s Law would state that of course as soon as we have a run of fine weather this would happen! However, I’m sure we’ll get more fine weather prior and during our daily lessons.

On Monday 1 March all children start swimming lessons with the REAP instructor. Children swim everyday until Monday 15 March which is the last session. Children need to ensure they have their togs every day during this period of time.

Athletics

On Thursday 4 March it is Waimea Athletics at Balfour. Parents transport their child/ren to Balfour for Athletics if they can and teachers transport any children who need a ride. It is a lovely community day, and a great time to catch up with folk from the wider community. More information and the day’s programme will be in the newsletter prior to Athletics Day.

Fat Lamb and Calf Competition

A lovely evening was held for prize giving last Friday evening at the Sports Grounds. Congratulations to the winners and placegetters in each of the lamb and calf categories.

Thank you to all of the sponsors who make this competition worth entering with fabulous prizes.

For those new to our community this competition involves our farming community who either donate 3 lambs or 1 - 2 calves to the Combined Sports Committee as a fundraiser. The funds are split between the school and the Combined Sports. The Sports committee use the funds to support sports clubs in Riversdale, and that is why we have such amazing rugby/cricket grounds, tennis courts, squash court, golf club etc. The school uses the funds to support teaching and learning programmes and to enhance our school grounds. This year’s donation will be spent on picnic tables for in front of each classroom, umbrellas, more sandpit toys and sports equipment.
